BálintSzombathy
Biography
Bálint Szombathy (1950, Pačir, Serbia) is a Serbian-Hungarian multimedia artist, writer, and art historian. He is recognized for his contributions to the neo-avant-garde movement in Eastern Europe and was a co-founder of the Bosch+Bosch Group in 1969. This collective connected artists from Vojvodina, Serbia, and Hungary to international experimental art movements, promoting conceptual and performance-based practices. Szombathy's work spans photography, performance art, visual poetry, and political art. In the early 1970s, he created photo-performance pieces that explored the intersection of ideology and personal identity, often incorporating symbols from modernist and political discourse. His works critique social and political narratives through an artistic lens, using semiotic analysis and visual experimentation. His connection to avant-garde and Fluxus circles is evident through his engagement with conceptual and action-based art, aligning with movements that challenged traditional artistic boundaries. His work reflects a dialogue with the international avant-garde, and his conceptual approach resonates with the radical artistic practices supported by Francesco Conz, who was known for publishing and promoting experimental artists. Szombathy continues to influence contemporary and neo-avant-garde art, bridging historical avant-garde strategies with new forms of visual and conceptual experimentation. His work remains a key reference for those exploring the relationship between art, politics, and cultural identity.
