Biography

Ilse Garnier, (1927, Kaiserslautern, Germany- 2020 Amiens, France) was a pioneering spatialist poet whose innovative approach transformed the way language could be experienced. Embracing the post-war artistic spirit, she emerged as a leading figure in concrete and visual poetry, blending text and visual elements to challenge traditional notions of language. In 1950, she met Pierre Garnier, who would become her husband and collaborator, and together they explored new poetic forms that celebrated the expressive potential of space and form. Later embracing her identity as a French poet, Garnier’s work resonated with a dynamic interplay between visual art and textual expression. She passed away in Amiens, in the Somme region of France, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to inspire contemporary artists and poets.
