Biography

Ingrid Wald (1943, Vienna, Austria) is an Austrian painter and restorer known for her expressive use of color and her innovative chair objects that merge functional design with artistic expression. Her work is deeply influenced by nature, literature, and the interplay between visual and poetic elements. Wald studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1962 to 1973, where she trained under Herbert Boeckl, Peter Andersen, and Joannis Avramidis. Alongside painting, she specialized in conservation and artistic techniques, which later informed her meticulous approach to materials and composition. From the 1970s onward, Wald worked as an independent artist and restorer, developing a style characterized by bold colors, dynamic compositions, and natural motifs. Her paintings frequently depict gardens, landscapes, and floral themes, evoking a sense of vitality. Her artistic practice extends beyond traditional painting, incorporating literary influences and interdisciplinary collaborations. Wald has collaborated closely with Austrian author and publisher Gerhard Jaschke, her life partner. Together, they formed the artistic duo JAWA, blending visual and literary elements in collaborative works such as "Gemeinschaftsarbeiten 1986–1989", which explored the intersections of text and image. Their creative partnership reflected a shared commitment to experimentation and artistic dialogue. Although not directly part of the Fluxus movement, Wald’s approach aligns with its principles, particularly in the way she integrates everyday objects into her artistic practice. Her work is included in the Archivio Conz, such as Damen und Herren (1985) and Wiesenspiel (1989).
