MichelePerfetti

Biography

Michele Perfetti (1931, Bari, Italy–2013) was an Italian artist known for his dynamic role in the evolution of Mail Art and visual poetry. Born in Bitonto, a town in the southern region of Bari, Perfetti developed an artistic language that merged image, text, and conceptual experimentation—placing him among the pioneering voices of postwar avant-garde movements in Italy. His creative career unfolded over several decades, with exhibitions across Italy and abroad, including Germany and Spain. One of his earliest confirmed participations was in the international Mail Art exhibition at Studio Levi in Milan, which set the tone for his lifelong engagement with collaborative and cross-border artistic practices. Perfetti’s work often explored the visual power of language, reconfiguring words into poetic forms and visual compositions that challenged conventional boundaries between literature and art. Throughout his journey, he collaborated with fellow innovators such as Lamberto Pignotti and Eugenio Miccini, aligning himself with the vibrant community that shaped the visual poetry and Fluxus scenes. His artistic output spans unique works, artist’s books, and printed editions—many of which are preserved in important archives, including the Fondazione Bonotto, a key institution for experimental and intermedia art. Michele Perfetti's legacy lies in his ability to transform communication into art, embracing the spontaneous, democratic spirit of Mail Art while also delving into the philosophical and poetic potential of the printed word. His contributions continue to resonate in contemporary dialogues around art, language, and the act of correspondence as a creative gesture.
